The Current Cost Envi monitor will show you how much energy you’re whole house is using "real time". It can’t save you money on its own, but it can help you change your habits. Monitoring how much electricity is consumed by your home will likely surprise you. You'll soon get used to your 'baseline' usage, and if it seems suddenly higher you'll know something has been left on.

The Envi monitor consists of two primary components, the display, and the transmitter. The display plugs into any wall socket in your house, pairs with the wireless transmitter, and will begin showing your home's energy usage. For comparison, it will also show the consumption from the previous day, and the cumulative usage over the past 30 days. The transmitter attaches to the exterior of your home's circuit breaker box or nearby wall with Velcro®, and it has two sensor clamps to encircle the mains coming into the panel. The clamps detect the magnetic field that is created as the current passes through the wire that is, in turn, surrounded by the clamp. The greater the energy use, the greater the magnetic signal. While no wiring is required, hiring an electrician to connect the transmitter is recommended.

The monitor will also display the time, and the indoor temperature. In addition to providing whole-house monitoring capability, remote accessories will soon be available to allow you to monitor the consumption of up to nine individual appliances in your home, as well as a PC interface, allowing you to view up to 7 years of historic data.
